It's September and I'm kicking off the 2008-2009 performing arts season with a new interview featuring Rebecca Greene Udden. Rebecca is the artistic director of Main Street Theater and she is also starring in their first play of the season: "Third" by Wendy Wasserstein. It's the story of a confident professor clashing with a student whom she thinks cheated on an exam. What ensues is a clash of generations, political identity and family issues. Doesn't that sound perfect for this time of the year? Click on the website to find out more: www.MainStreetTheater.com. Be sure to take a look at the other plays in their season too, they're all worth going to.
Shannon Emerick is also on the show. She is not only one of Houston' best working actresses, she is also the marketing director at Main Street Theater. The are starting a program of acting classes for adults and Shannon has the scoop on that.
The show is now up on the podcast page and you can therefore listen to it before it airs this Sunday. Click here to hear it now, or, click here and check it out in the iTunes store where you can subscribe to the podcast and get it every week on your iPod. It's all free and without commercial interruptions, naturally.

As you see above, the performing arts season is kicking off this weekend.
Dominic Walsh Dance Theater and Mercury Baroque are also performing free shows at The Miller Outdoor Theatre. (I know, I spelled the word "theater" two different ways - that is correct.)
The musicians of Mercury Baroque will perform "Strings of Fire." Leave it to conductor and artistic director Antoine Plante to find a way to make Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani and Locatelli sound cool like Kid Rock. The compositions are performed on period instruments, as always. That's on Friday September 5th at 8 PM. It's a free show. Click here for more info.
The following two nights, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater are performing Walsh's version of "Sleeping Beauty." The music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky classic. Dominic Walsh's version of the tale is contemporary. The result is both beautiful and cool. The shows are at 8 PM on Saturday and Sunday (9/6&7) and they're free, too. Click here for more info.
Both Dominic and Antoine were on FM Houston recently (they have even appeared together since they are frequent collaborators) and they will return soon. In the meantime, click here to go to the podcast page if you'd like to hear their last interviews.
So with all that going on and "Third" opening at Main Street Theater this Thursday... it's a big week. _

This week is an opportunity to learn about Multiple Sclerosis (often called "MS"), a neurological disease with symptoms that vary from patient to patient, making it very hard to diagnose and even harder to treat.
Toni Saldana-King and Allison Lipnick work on a daily basis with patients suffering from MS. They tell me about the resources available to patients and their families. Family members are often unsung heroes in the stories of people dealing with deadly or debilitating diseases. Traditionally, little attention is given to this side of the story in the media. We talk about them on FM Houston and about how they can get help to cope, too.
